I have been looking into the different settings recently, and I am really starting to like the Dark Sun setting. As far as I understand, the way magic is handled is much different, and it turns most common things in D&D on its side. Anybody have any experience running any games in it that might be able to give me some more information?

We have the Campaign Books and several Dark Sun Adventures, including last seasons D&D Encounters, set in Dark Sun.

It is a Very Different D&D World.

There are no Clerics, Metal is rare, Halflings are Cannibals, Wizards are shunned and hunted, day to day survival is a challenge.

That's just a few things.

It's not as whacked out as RAVENLOFT!  Smiley

I played a Lawful Good cleric who was transported into Ravenloft.  That was, ummmmmm, an adventure.  Smiley

Then there's DRAGONLANCE.  Gold is near worthless, brass and iron are your conventional money, and warfare is everyday business.

Granted, I'm not sure if either of those campaigns were released past second edition AD&D.  Sad.  Sad

But have fun with DARK SUN!  All desert, all the tiiiiiime.

I like the idea of being in a setting where it is constant survival, and there isn't any true "rest." From what I have read, and heard in podcasts, Dark Sun has a lot of potential, and I think I might look into running through that  little bit.

Dragonlance was updated for 3E (and the SAGA system was released by TSR in its death throes) but Ravenloft never 'officially' came to 3E.

In 4E, Ravenloft is certainly there - with a boxed set and some reprints/updates of classic adventures.

Well, I think I am going to try to run a mini-campaign in Dark Sun starting within the next couple of weeks. I have already spoken to a couple of the people who play encounters each week, and I should be able to have enough people to run it.

I think I will try to handle it in a way similar to encounters. People can drop in and out, but there will be a set of 6 adventurers to choose from, that way the story and characters are always the same, even if the players change. Since Wednesday is my only consistent free day in the week, I was thinking we could run it a couple of hours before we run encounters. We could try it out a little bit, and see how far we want to take it. It will be based in some of the pre-generated adventures by WotC, so it won't be that thrilling or original at first, but if it goes well and people are interested, I plan on creating more story for it.

Mike, I was hoping you wouldn't mind if I run it in the store earlier on wednesdays. also, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if I use some of your mini's for it as well. otherwise, I will have all the materials I will need.
